Visiting Taipei in July
July: hot and sticky
July feels steamy from morning on, with highs around 31°C and lows near 26°C. Humidity is high, and rain falls on many days, often in heavy bursts. The sun still comes out, but cloudy skies and showers can interrupt a long day outdoors.
Taipei 101, the National Palace Museum and the underground sections of Taipei Main Station work well when the afternoon feels too sticky. Save longer walks for cooler parts of the day, and don't count on a dry afternoon for a hike up Elephant Mountain.
What to do
Taipei Children's Arts Festival often has performances and activities during the summer school break. Dates and events change each year, so check the festival programme before you go. July is also typhoon season; storms can bring travel disruption as well as rain.
If you're travelling with kids, the festival and Taipei's air-conditioned museums make a more comfortable mix than a full day outside.
Crowds and local tips
July is quieter than Taipei's popular November-to-March travel season for many international visitors, and prices can be less pressured. But local school holidays bring families to popular sights, so indoor attractions may feel busy. Rain and heat also make July less appealing for a sightseeing-heavy trip.
For a practical rainy-day route, take the MRT to Taipei 101 and use the connected underground paths to reach the mall and nearby shops without staying outside long. At a night market, try a bowl of shaved ice when the evening still feels warm.
