April: warm days by the harbour

April feels like summer in Kaohsiung, with highs around 30°C and warm evenings. It's hotter than March, and the humidity can make walking around the city feel sticky. Rain comes on some days, but April is far drier than May.

You can still enjoy outdoor stops like the Love River or the waterfront at Pier-2 Art Center. Take breaks in air-conditioned museums during the hottest part of the day. Long walks up Shoushan can feel tiring in the heat, so save them for a cooler morning.

Holidays and crowds

Children's Day and Tomb Sweeping Day fall in early April. Many Taiwanese families travel or visit relatives around the holiday, so trains and popular sights can be busier then. Check local holiday dates before choosing your travel days.

If you hate crowds, visit outside the holiday period. April is past Kaohsiung's best-value cooler season, December to March, but it's still ahead of the wetter, hotter stretch in May. Prices may be less pressured than during major holiday travel, though demand can rise around the long weekend.

Getting around in the heat

April brings some rain, so a sudden shower may interrupt an outdoor plan. Keep indoor options like the National Science and Technology Museum in mind, especially if you're travelling with kids.

For a practical local tip, take the ferry from Gushan to Cijin before exploring the island. The crossing gives you a breeze, and you can try Cijin's grilled seafood near the harbour. If the sun feels strong, swap a long walk along Cijin's coast for time in the shade by the old fort.
