Visiting Fukuoka in June
June: rainy-season days
Fukuoka is warm, sticky and often wet in June. Highs reach 27°C, but humidity is high and skies are often cloudy. Rain falls on about half the days, so sudden showers can interrupt a walk through Ohori Park or a visit to Fukuoka Castle ruins.
You can still enjoy indoor sights like the Hakata Machiya Folk Museum, or browse Canal City Hakata between showers. Long outdoor plans, beach time and hikes are less reliable; wet paths and heavy rain can make them a chore. July is even wetter and hotter, so June isn't the worst month for a summer visit.
Festivals and quieter streets
June falls in Japan's rainy season, called tsuyu. There's no national public holiday this month, and Fukuoka's best-known summer festival, Hakata Gion Yamakasa, takes place in July. You may spot preparations, but don't expect the main festival events yet.
If you hate crowds, June can suit you. It's generally quieter than October, one of Fukuoka's best months for weather, and the spring travel rush has passed. Hotel rates can be gentler than in peak seasons, though rainy weekends may still draw visitors.
Make the rain work
Keep your plans flexible: pair an outdoor stop with a nearby indoor one, such as Ohori Park and the Fukuoka Art Museum. For a rainy evening, head to Nakasu's covered streets and try Hakata ramen in a local yatai, a small street-food stall. Some stalls may close in poor weather.
Travelling with kids? The covered shopping arcades around Kawabata make it easier to duck out of a downpour without giving up an outing. Check the route between stops, too: a short walk can feel much longer when the pavements are wet and the air is muggy.
