May weather in Fukuoka

May feels like a proper spring month: mild days, cooler evenings and enough sun for long walks. Showers come and go, so the weather can interrupt a full day outdoors. June is much wetter, though, so May is a better bet for exploring before the rainy season.

You'll have comfortable conditions for Ohori Park, the castle ruins and a stroll through the shops in Tenjin. The beaches are pleasant for a walk, but don't count on a reliably sunny beach day. If rain moves in, duck into the covered arcades around Kawabata or spend time at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum.

Festivals and crowds

Hakata Dontaku takes over the city on May 3 and 4, with parades and dancing around Hakata and Tenjin. It's a fun time to see Fukuoka at its liveliest, but the crowds and road closures can make getting around slower.

Golden Week, Japan's cluster of national holidays in early May, also brings busy trains, hotels and popular sights. Prices tend to rise around the holidays, then ease once they're over. Outside that rush, May is generally less crowded than peak travel periods later in the year.

If you hate crowds, visit after Golden Week and enjoy a quieter walk around Ohori Park.

A local tip

For Hakata Dontaku, use the subway to reach Tenjin or Hakata rather than relying on buses through the parade area. Check the event route before choosing a stop, since street closures can change the easiest walk.

May's mild weather makes it a good month to try yatai, Fukuoka's small outdoor food stalls, in Nakasu or Tenjin. A shower can make an open-air meal less appealing, so keep a nearby covered arcade in mind as a backup.
