When to go to Fukuoka: a seasonal guide
Spring and autumn: the sweet spots
October is our top pick, and November rates Excellent too. Days are dry and mild, with the most sun of the year in October. It's easy weather for walking Ohori Park, climbing the steps at Kushida Shrine, or taking the short train to Dazaifu. The shrine town there is lovely when the leaves turn in late November.
April is Good. Cherry blossom usually lands in late March or early April, and Maizuru Park, around the ruins of Fukuoka Castle, fills with picnic blankets. March is cooler and wetter, so go for the blossom, not the weather. Golden Week, the string of national holidays at the start of May, is busy. Book trains and hotels early for those days.
June to September: wet, then hot
Early summer is the rainy season, and June brings rain on half the days. July is the wettest month, with rain on 18 days and heavy, sticky air. August is the hottest, at 32°C by day and 24°C at night. It's drier than July but still muggy. September stays humid and is also when typhoons can pass through Kyushu, so keep your plans flexible.
Still, summer has a big draw. Hakata Gion Yamakasa runs from 1 to 15 July. It ends with teams of men racing heavy floats through the streets at dawn on the 15th. It's loud, wet and worth seeing. Beach days at Momochi or a ferry to Nokonoshima island work best in August, when skies are brighter. Evenings at the riverside yatai, the open-air food stalls, are warm but sweaty.
Winter: quiet and cool
Winter isn't harsh. Daytime sits around 9 to 11°C, nights get close to freezing, and skies are often grey. Snow is rare. That makes it the calm season, with short queues and cheaper rooms outside the New Year break. Many locals head to shrines like Kushida for the first visit of the year in early January.
This is the time for a steaming bowl of Hakata tonkotsu ramen, the creamy pork-bone kind. Pull up a stool at a yatai with a heater and a blanket. Hot springs also feel better now, whether you stay in the city or go to nearby Beppu.
If you want one simple answer, go in late October or November. If you love festivals and don't mind sweat, pick early July.
