Spring and autumn: the sweet spots
April, May and October all score Excellent, and October is our top pick. It's mild, with highs around 20°C and only five rainy days. The air feels crisp, not sticky, and the light is good for walking.
April and May are a little wetter but still pleasant. Cool mornings turn into warm afternoons that suit Mudeungsan, the big mountain park right beside the city. Its trails are the main reason to come outdoors here. The Mudeungsan area is also famous for its rice dishes and Korean set meals. In October, the leaves on the slopes start to turn, so weekends on the trails can get busy. March and November are Good, but you'll want a jacket.
Summer: hot, wet and heavy
June is the start of the rainy season, which Koreans call jangma. July is the worst of it. You'll get 17 rainy days, humidity near 88%, and warm nights that barely cool down. August is just as hot, with a bit less rain. Both months rate Poor.
Do you still need to travel then? Plan the day around indoor stops. The Asia Culture Center and the Gwangju National Museum both keep you dry and cool. Walk the Yangdong Market in the evening, when the heat eases. September is still muggy, but the rain thins out and the city slowly gets comfortable again.
Winter: cold, grey and quiet
January is the coldest month, with lows of -4°C and only about three hours of sun a day. Snow does fall, and it can make the Mudeungsan trails icy. February and December are a touch milder, but still cold at night. Crowds are small, and indoor food is a big part of the trip. Try the hot stews in the old restaurants around Gwangju's central district.
Events and crowds
May is a key month. The city marks the 18 May Democratic Uprising of 1980 with solemn ceremonies, and the May 18 National Cemetery is a moving place to visit. If you come then, go with respect, not as a party trip. In autumn, the Gwangju Biennale, a major contemporary art show, usually runs in the cooler months in even-numbered years, so check the current schedule. Gwangju is not a heavy tourist city. The busiest times are Korean holidays like Chuseok in autumn and Lunar New Year in winter, when many locals travel and some shops close for a day or two.
