When to go to Changwon: a seasonal guide
Spring: cherry blossom and mild days
March is cool and still a bit bare, but it rates Good. By April the city warms up, and the trees along Yeojwacheon Stream and in the Jinhae district burst into pink. Changwon's Jinhae Gunhangje Festival, the big cherry blossom festival, usually runs in early April. It's the one time the area gets properly crowded, so expect packed trains and long walks from the station. If you hate crowds, go on a weekday morning or visit Jinhae just before or after the peak.
May is one of the two best months here. Highs reach 21°C, the sun is out about six hours a day, and it's good for walking around Yongji Lake Park and the hills near Jindallae. Rain does fall on about nine days, but it's usually light enough to work around.
Summer: hot, wet and sticky
June is the start of the rainy season, called jangma in Korean. July is the wettest month, with rain on 18 days, and August is the hottest at 29°C. The nights stay warm and the air feels heavy. Typhoons can also arrive in late summer and disrupt ferries and flights.
Is it worth going? Only if you must. Domestic holidaymakers head to the south coast beaches in late July and early August, so prices and traffic go up even though the weather is poor. Plan indoor days around the National Museum of Contemporary Art's nearby alternatives, big shopping centres and cafés. Use Masan's seafood market for dinner, where the local specialty, agujjim (spicy braised monkfish), is worth trying.
Autumn: the sweet spot
October is our top pick. Highs are around 21°C, the nights are cool, and rain falls on only six days. September is still humid and showery, so wait until the month turns. By November it's crisp and still rated Excellent, with maple and ginkgo leaves turning around the lakes and in the hills.
The Changwon Chrysanthemum Festival in Masan, held around late October to November, fits nicely into this window. It's also a good time for hiking Jirisan-style trails in the nearby hills, with clear views and few bugs.
Winter: quiet and dry
December to February is cold but not harsh. Highs sit between 6°C and 8°C, with lows just below freezing in January. It's the driest stretch of the year and often sunny. You'll find few tourists, easy bookings and a good season for hot street food and soups. It suits a city-focused trip, but it's not the time for beaches.
