When to go to Busan: a seasonal guide
Spring and autumn: the sweet spots
October is our top pick for Busan, and May and November are close behind. All three rate Excellent. Days are mild, around 21°C in May and October, and the rain is light enough that you can walk the coast without a plan B.
May is good for the Haeundae seafront and the Gamcheon Culture Village, where you'll climb a lot of colourful hillside stairs. It does get busier then, with holidays and warm weekends. October is drier and a bit calmer, and it's when the Busan International Film Festival fills the Centum City and Nampo areas. Cinema fans should plan around it. Everyone else should know that hotels near the screenings fill up.
November is cooler, around 15°C by day. You'll have the Taejongdae cliff trails with fewer people on them. April is a nice extra: it's lovely for cherry blossom near Samnak Riverside Park, though showers are common.
Summer: hot, wet and crowded
Beach season runs from early July to August, and Haeundae and Gwangalli get packed. Is it worth it? Only if you love a lively beach. July is the wettest month in the data, with rain on 18 days and humidity near 89%. August is the hottest at 29°C, and it's still rated Poor.
June is milder, but it's the start of the rainy spell, and it's rated Fair. September can bring typhoon-season downpours, so keep your plans flexible. If you do come in summer, the Busan Sea Festival and the beach nights at Gwangalli, with the lit-up Gwangan Bridge as a backdrop, are the highlights. When it rains, head to the Jagalchi Fish Market or the spa at Shinsegae Centum City, which is huge and fully indoors.
Winter: quiet and crisp
December through February is cold but rarely harsh, with highs of 6–8°C. January is the coldest month, with lows around -1°C, and it's also the driest. Skies are fairly clear, which helps if you want views from Busan Tower or the Haedong Yonggungsa temple on the rocks by the sea.
This is low season. Rooms are cheaper, and you'll find seats at the grilled-fish and hot-soup places in Nampo. Travelling on a budget? Winter suits you. You'll want a proper coat for the sea wind, especially at Songdo's skywalk.
March is a gentle bridge into spring, with highs of 12°C and a Good rating.
