When to go to Daegu: a seasonal guide
Spring and autumn: the sweet spots
April, May and October all rate Excellent, and our comfort score puts May and October at the top. In April you'll have mild days and cool nights. By May it's warm enough for a T-shirt, and the evenings stay pleasant.
Spring is cherry blossom time, usually early April. Walk up Duryu Park or along the streams in the city, then head out to Palgongsan, the mountain just north of town, for hiking. Autumn is drier and calmer. Leaves turn on Palgongsan in late October and into November, and the cable car up to the Palgongsan ridge gives you the view without the climb.
If you only have one trip, pick one of these. Ask yourself if you'd rather have flowers or fall colour, then choose.
Summer: hot, then very wet
Daegu is famous in Korea for its heat. It sits in a basin ringed by mountains, so the air gets trapped. June is already warm and a bit damp. July and August are the hottest months, tied at 30°C for the average high, and they're also the wettest. July sees rain on 17 days.
Sticky afternoons are normal, and the rain often comes as heavy downpours. It's not a great time for hiking. If you come anyway, spend your middle hours indoors. Try the covered Seomun Market, or the underground shopping areas around Banwoldang station. Then go out for the evening, when it's cooler. Try the local dish makchang (grilled pork intestine) in Anjirang Gopchang Alley.
Late June brings the Daegu Chimac Festival, a summer fried chicken and beer party in Duryu Park. It's a fun reason to visit if you can handle the heat. We'd only suggest it if you're relaxed about the weather.
Winter: cold, dry and quiet
January is the coldest month, with highs of 3°C and lows of -7°C. It's dry and often sunny, though, with just 4 rainy days. The cold bites at night, so it suits city breaks better than hiking.
This is the quietest time. You'll have museums, cafés and the herbal medicine market, Yangnyeongsi, mostly to yourself. A hot bowl of jjimgalbi (braised spicy ribs, a Daegu speciality) is the perfect answer to the cold.
March and November are the in-between months. Both rate Good, with fewer people around. March can still feel chilly in the mornings, while November has crisp, clear days.
Crowds and timing
Korean holidays bring the busiest days. Expect more people around Lunar New Year in late January or February, and Chuseok, the autumn harvest holiday, in September or October. Many shops close for a day or two, and trains fill up. Peak blossom and leaf-colour weekends are busy at Palgongsan too, so aim for weekdays.
