Daegu's January days feel properly wintry, with highs around 3°C and lows near -7°C. It's dry for much of the month, but the cold can make long walks feel tiring. You'll get some clear, sunny spells, which are good for city sights and views from Apsan Observatory.

Save long hikes on Apsan for a milder day; paths can be icy. Indoor stops such as Daegu National Museum and the shops around Dongseongno suit colder afternoons. If you're craving local food, warm up with grilled makchang, a Daegu favourite.

Holidays and quiet streets

New Year's Day is a public holiday in South Korea. Some places may have different opening hours, so check before setting out. Seollal, the Lunar New Year holiday, can fall in January or February. If it lands during your visit, expect some businesses to close and travel to get busier.

If you hate crowds, January is a calmer choice than May or October, Daegu's best months overall. It's winter low season, so accommodation can be cheaper than in those popular months, though prices vary.

Make the cold work for you

January's short days leave less time for wandering, but the limited rain means you can still enjoy outdoor sights between indoor breaks. Try Gyeongsang-gamyeong Park, then warm up with food in the nearby centre. The weather is a poor fit for a beach-style trip or long, exposed walks.

Travelling with kids? Keep Apsan's steep trails for another season and take the cable car for the views instead. Check its operating status on the day, as winter weather can affect service. For an easy warm-up, Daegu's subway connects central areas such as Banwoldang with Dongseongno.
