Visiting Gwangju in January
January feels cold and dim
Gwangju's January days are chilly, with afternoon highs around 4°C and nights dropping well below freezing. It's winter, so the short daylight and limited sunshine can make the city feel grey. Rain is modest, but damp air can make time outside feel even colder, and that chill is the main reason January ranks low here.
You can still enjoy a city break if you mix outdoor stops with warm indoor ones. Start with the May 18th National Cemetery, then spend a good stretch at the Gwangju National Museum. For a walk, keep it short around Sajik Park and head indoors once the cold sets in. Long hikes in Mudeungsan National Park are less appealing if you don't enjoy cold trails.
Quiet streets, with a holiday caveat
If you'd rather avoid crowds, January has its perks. It's quieter than October, which is Gwangju's best month to visit, so you may find better-value stays than during busier travel periods, though prices vary. Keep in mind that New Year's Day is a public holiday in South Korea. Seollal, the Lunar New Year, can fall in January or February, so check the calendar, since travel and opening hours can change around it.
If you're on a budget and like calm streets, January might suit you. Just expect a colder, less lively outdoor visit.
Make the cold work for you
Warm up with tteokgalbi, Gwangju's grilled short-rib dish, around Songjeong-dong. It's a good follow-up to a chilly stop at the 1913 Songjeong Station Market, where you can browse local food and shops. For a cosy indoor break, the Gwangju National Museum is a better bet than a long afternoon outside.
Take the subway to Geumnamno 4-ga for the May 18th Democracy Square area, then duck into nearby cafés between sights. That keeps the central history walk manageable when the cold starts to bite.
