Gwangju Weather in December

Cold, short days

December in Gwangju feels properly wintry. Afternoons reach about 6°C, while nights can drop below freezing. Rain is limited, but cloudy skies and little sunshine can make the cold feel persistent. You'll have less daylight for sightseeing, so keep outdoor stops focused.

The May 18th National Cemetery and the Asian Culture Center work well for a thoughtful visit, with indoor exhibits offering a warm break. Mudeungsan is still beautiful, but icy trails can make hiking risky; stick to lower paths if conditions are slippery. A long beach day isn't really an option nearby, either.

Christmas and crowds

Christmas brings a public holiday and seasonal lights to central Gwangju, including the Chungjang-ro shopping area. It's a cheerful place for an evening stroll, though shops and restaurants may be busier around the holiday.

December is generally quieter than October, Gwangju's best month for weather, and you'll often find fewer visitors than in the mild autumn season. Prices can be gentler, too, though holiday dates may be an exception. For budget travellers, this calmer winter stretch can suit a city break, as long as you're happy to trade warm outdoor days for cosy meals and indoor sights.

A warm-up in Songjeong

For a practical cold-weather stop, head to Songjeong tteokgalbi street near Gwangju Songjeong Station. Tteokgalbi is grilled, minced beef shaped into a patty; it makes a filling meal after time outdoors. The station also makes this a handy stop if you're arriving by train.

December averages a high of 6°C and a low of -2°C, so give Mudeungsan a miss on icy days. January is colder, while November is milder but wetter. If you're visiting with young children, plan shorter outdoor walks and use the Asian Culture Center as a warm indoor break.
