February feels like winter

Gwangju stays cold in February, with daytime highs around 7°C and nights dipping below freezing. The air can feel damp, and grey skies are common. Rain falls on only a handful of days, but the 3.4 hours of daily sun means you won't get much bright afternoon light.

It's a good month for indoor stops such as the National Asia Culture Center, plus shorter walks around Yangnim-dong's historic houses. On dry days, you can visit Mudeungsan National Park, but icy paths and cold winds can make longer hikes uncomfortable. Save long, exposed trails for milder weather.

Holidays and local plans

Seollal, the Korean Lunar New Year, sometimes falls in February. When it does, many locals travel to see family, and some shops and restaurants close for the holiday. Dates change each year, so check whether your trip overlaps before counting on a particular place to eat.

A quieter, cheaper month

February is winter's quieter stretch, so Gwangju usually feels less crowded than in October, one of the best months to visit. Accommodation and flights can also cost less than during popular travel periods, though Seollal can bring a brief rush as people travel across Korea.

For a warm meal after a chilly walk, head to Gwangju Songjeong Station's tteokgalbi street. Tteokgalbi is grilled, minced beef shaped into a small patty. It's a local specialty, and a welcome reason to come in from the cold.
