April weather in Gwangju

April feels like a proper spring month: mild afternoons, cool mornings and a fair chance of rain. The average high is 18°C, but the low drops to 6°C, so evenings can feel chilly. Rain falls on about eight days, and cloudy spells are common.

It's a good time to walk along Gwangjucheon or visit the May 18th National Cemetery without summer heat. Cherry blossoms around Sajik Park add colour to a city stroll. Heavy rain can spoil longer walks, though, and wet paths make a mountain hike less appealing.

April's cherry blossoms are the main seasonal draw. They're lovely for a relaxed walk, but the best bloom period shifts with the weather, so don't expect flowers throughout the month. There isn't a major annual April festival I'd plan a trip around. South Korea's public holidays, Children's Day and Buddha's Birthday, fall in May in some years, not reliably in April.

Families who enjoy parks and easy walks will find April more comfortable than the hotter months.

Crowds and local tips

Gwangju is usually less busy in April than during its popular autumn season, and stays can be easier to find than in October. Prices vary, so don't assume every hotel will be cheaper. Cherry blossom spots can still draw local crowds on sunny weekends.

For a useful local stop, take the steps up to Sajik Park's observation area for views over the city. If rain sets in, head to Yangnim-dong instead: its historic houses and cafés make a good sheltered wander between showers. Try a bowl of Gwangju-style tteokgalbi, grilled minced beef patties, nearby.
