Cool days by the coast

December in Jeju City feels cool, cloudy and often damp. Days are much cooler than November, and rain can interrupt plans, though showers don't last every day. The sea air around Tapdong can feel sharper than it does inland. Sightseeing still works well at the Jeju National Museum or Dongmun Market, where you can duck indoors between stops.

You'll get limited sunshine and short daylight, so keep long outdoor plans flexible. A walk along the Yongduam coast can be lovely when skies clear, but exposed coastal paths are less pleasant in wind and rain. Save Hallasan hikes for a clear forecast; winter conditions higher up can be very different from the city.

Christmas and quieter streets

Christmas Day is a public holiday in South Korea, and Jeju City may have seasonal displays around shopping areas such as Chilseong-ro. New Year brings a reason to celebrate, but Jeju's best-known sunrise gatherings are elsewhere on the island, not in the city centre.

December is generally calmer and less costly than the busy summer months, though holiday dates can bring more visitors to popular spots. Families who prefer indoor stops will find Dongmun Market handy for snacks and a break from the weather.

A local winter tip

Warm up with gogi-guksu, Jeju-style pork noodle soup, at a local noodle shop. It's a satisfying choice after a damp walk, and more suited to a chilly day than a beach lunch. Dongmun Market is also a good place to try local tangerines, which are in season in winter.

For a practical route, use Jeju Intercity Bus Terminal as your starting point for trips around the island. Check the return journey before heading out: winter evenings get dark early, and bus waits can feel long in the cold.
