When to go to Ulsan: a seasonal guide

Spring and autumn: the sweet spots

May and October are the best months, and November is almost as good. Days are mild, around 20°C, and the air feels dry compared with summer. You can walk all day without sweating through your shirt.

In spring, head to Taehwagang National Garden. Its bamboo grove and flower fields are at their best now. Ulsan Grand Park is also lovely, and the Jangsaengpo area near the coast is good for a slow seafood lunch. Fresh whale-meat dishes are a local tradition, but you'll also find plenty of raw fish and grilled mackerel. In autumn, try the reed fields at Ulsan Grand Park and the hills around Ganwolsan, which is famous for silver grass. Late October and November bring clear, crisp days.

Travelling with kids? Both seasons work well. Weekends and Korean holidays can feel busy at big sights, so go midweek if you can.

Summer: hot, wet and sticky

June starts the rain, and July is the worst. It's the wettest month, with rain on 18 days, and it feels heavy and humid. August is the hottest, at 28°C by day and only a little cooler at night. Both months are rated Poor.

The rainy season, called jangma, runs through early summer. Expect grey skies and sudden downpours. Typhoons can also hit the southeast coast in late summer and early autumn, so September is only Fair. Ilsan Beach and Jinha Beach are open for swimming in summer, and they get lively on dry weekends. If you hate humidity, skip July and August. If you must come, plan indoor stops like the Ulsan Whale Museum and Jangsaengpo's Whale Culture Village.

Winter: quiet and cold

Winter is dry and calm, but it's chilly. Highs in January sit around 6°C, with nights at freezing. Skies are fairly bright, so it feels crisp rather than gloomy. Snow is not common on the coast.

This is low season, so you'll have places to yourself. The big draw is sunrise. Ulsan's Ganjeolgot Point is one of the first places on mainland Korea to see the sun on New Year's morning, and people gather there for it. Dress warmly for that one, since the sea wind bites.

Early spring is a bridge. March and April are rated Good, with cool mornings and warmer afternoons. Cherry blossom usually appears in early April, though the timing shifts from year to year. Rain picks up in April, so keep a small umbrella handy.

For a simple plan, pick May or October for sightseeing and hiking, November for quiet walks, and winter only if you want empty streets and a cold sunrise.
