April: mild spring days

April is one of Fukuoka's nicer months for exploring on foot. Afternoons feel mild, while mornings and evenings can still be cool. Rain comes on some days, and cloudy skies are common, so don't expect wall-to-wall sunshine.

The weather suits a walk around Ohori Park or the paths by Fukuoka Castle in Maizuru Park. Cherry blossoms may linger into early April, but their timing varies. A wet day can make long outdoor sightseeing less appealing; Tenjin's covered shopping streets give you an easy change of plan.

Festivals and holidays

Fukuoka Castle's Sakura Festival brings food stalls and evening viewing to Maizuru Park during cherry-blossom season. It's a lovely spot, but popular viewing times can feel crowded.

Showa Day on April 29 begins Japan's Golden Week holiday period. Many people travel then, and popular sights, trains and hotels can get busier and cost more than in quieter months. Outside that holiday stretch, April is still a popular spring visit, so expect more demand than in less popular periods.

If you hate crowds, visit Maizuru Park on a weekday and avoid the Golden Week rush.
