Spring and autumn: the sweet spots
April is Excellent, and March and May are Good. Days are mild, the evenings stay comfortable, and rain falls on about ten days a month. It's rarely heavy. That suits walking along the Yangtze, which runs right past the city, and exploring Zhonghu Lake's park paths without sweating through your shirt.
October is our top pick, and November and April are also rated Excellent. October is the driest of the three, with rain on only eight days and the most sun of the year alongside August. Autumn is the time for city strolls, visits to Tianmen Mountain park, and long meals of local food. Try Wuhu's famous iron-painting craft in shops and galleries. Don't skip a bowl of the local noodles either.
Summer: hot, wet and sticky
June to August are all rated Poor, and you'll feel why. Highs reach 32°C in July and August, nights barely cool off, and humidity sits above 80%. July is the wettest month, with rain on 18 days. June brings the start of the plum rains, the long damp stretch typical of the lower Yangtze region.
If you come anyway, plan indoor stops for the afternoon and save riverside walks for the evening. Wuhu has no big beach scene, so there's little to pull you outdoors in the heat. Travelling with kids? The Fantawild theme parks are a popular choice, though outdoor queues in July are tough. Summer school holidays run through July and August, so local families fill attractions then.
Winter: quiet and chilly
January and February are Fair. Highs are 8°C to 11°C, nights dip to freezing in January, and the damp air makes it feel colder than the numbers suggest. Buildings here often have little heating, so cosy tea houses and hot pots become your best friends. December is drier, with rain on only six days, and rates Good.
If you hate crowds, winter is the quietest time. The main exception is Chinese New Year, which falls in late January or February. Many shops and restaurants close for several days, and trains are packed as people head home. Check the date before you book anything.
Autumn also has a busy patch. The National Day holiday in early October pushes up train traffic and attraction crowds across China. For the best weather with fewer people, aim for late October or November.
