Best Time to Visit Hefei

Spring and autumn: the sweet spots

March to May and October to November are when Hefei feels easiest. March is cool and fresh, around 17°C by day. By May it's warm, and you can walk the lakeside paths in Baohe Park or around Xiaoyaojin Park (a riverside park tied to a famous Three Kingdoms battle) without sweating through your shirt. Rain is steady in spring, though, so expect some grey afternoons.

October is our top pick. Days are mild, nights are cool, and it's the sunniest and driest of the comfortable months. November is almost as good, just a little colder in the evenings. If you want to visit Mount Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) as a side trip, this is also the time its views are at their clearest.

Summer: hot, wet and sticky

June to August is the hard stretch. Highs sit around 31-32°C, and nights stay warm. July is the wettest month, with rain on 18 days, so showers are almost a daily thing. Humidity makes the afternoons heavy.

Early summer brings the plum rain season (meiyu), a long damp spell across the Yangtze region. If you do come, plan indoor stops like the Anhui Museum, and save outdoor sights for the evening. Hotels are cheaper, and you won't fight crowds, but you will fight the weather.

Winter: quiet and chilly

December to February is cold, grey and fairly dry. Nights drop to around freezing, and houses here often have little or no central heating, so it can feel colder indoors than you'd expect. Snow is rare and doesn't last. The upside is quiet streets and a good excuse to eat hot pot, or a warming bowl of local beef noodles.

The big crowd moment is Spring Festival (Chinese New Year), usually late January or February. Many shops and restaurants close for a few days, and trains are packed as people head home. If you're not visiting family, avoid that week.

Crowds and timing

Hefei isn't a big tourist magnet, so crowds are mostly about Chinese holidays. Expect busier trains and sights around Golden Week, the national holiday in the first week of October. That makes early to mid-October pleasant but a bit crowded around Huangshan. Late October is calmer. Travelling with kids? School holidays in July and August bring families, but you'll mostly see them in hotels and indoor spots, not at the weather's mercy outdoors.
