February feels like winter

Hefei stays chilly in February, with daytime highs around 10°C and nights near freezing. The damp air, frequent cloud and limited sunshine can make it feel colder than the thermometer suggests. Rain falls on several days, so outdoor plans work best when the sky is clear.

You can still walk around Xiaoyaojin Park or visit the Anhui Museum, but a long, exposed afternoon outdoors may feel uncomfortable. Save the Dashu Mountain trails for a dry day, and keep indoor sights in mind if rain settles in. March is warmer, though it's also wetter.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling during the Spring Festival rush. Outside the holiday, February is winter low season, so Hefei is generally quieter than during its popular October travel period. Prices can be gentler too, though holiday travel may push transport costs and demand up.

Make the most of a cold day

Travelling with kids? A chilly or rainy day suits the indoor exhibits at Anhui Museum better than a long walk beside Chaohu Lake.

For a local warm-up, try Hefei's famous sanhe rice dumplings, a savoury local snack, in the old town of Sanhe. It makes a cosy stop after exploring the historic lanes. If you're heading to Xiaoyaojin Park, choose a clearer part of the day: the damp cold can make its open paths feel less inviting once the sun fades.
