September feels like a step down from Hefei's sticky summer. Days can still be warm, but evenings are cooler, and the humidity can make walking feel muggy. Rain falls on several days, so showers may interrupt a visit. It's less wet than August, though, and the cooler feel makes outdoor sightseeing more comfortable.

Baohe Park and the grounds around Lord Bao Temple suit a walk between showers. For a longer outing, Sanhe Ancient Town is easier to enjoy than in August's hotter weather. Avoid making a full day of exposed outdoor plans: cloud and rain can change the feel of an afternoon.

Events and crowds

The Mid-Autumn Festival sometimes falls in September, but its date moves each year. If it does, you may see mooncakes in shops and families gathering for the holiday. September isn't the National Day holiday; that begins in October and brings a major travel rush.

If you hate crowds, September is often calmer than August's school-break period or October's Golden Week. Prices are generally less pressured than during the October holiday, though local demand can rise around Mid-Autumn Festival.
