Hefei Weather in December

December: cold and quiet

December feels properly wintry in Hefei. Days reach about 10°C, but nights can dip below freezing, so the cold is sharper after sunset. Rain is lighter than in November or January, and you'll get some sunny spells, though cloudy skies are common.

It's a good month for indoor stops such as the Anhui Museum or Li Hongzhang's Former Residence. On a dry day, walk around Swan Lake, but don't count on a long, warm lakeside afternoon. The short daylight makes outdoor sightseeing feel rushed later in the day.

Festivals and crowds

The winter solstice, Dongzhi, falls in December. Families often mark it with dumplings, a fitting time to try Hefei's local food. Christmas is visible in some shopping areas, but it isn't a public holiday in China. New Year's Day comes just after December.

If you hate crowds, December is a calmer choice than October, Hefei's best-known month for visiting. Domestic tourism is generally quieter in winter, and hotel rates can be lower than during autumn's popular travel period. Still, prices vary, and weekends around major sights can feel busier than weekdays.

For a winter day out, take a taxi to Sanhe Ancient Town rather than relying on a long walk from the edge of town. Its old lanes and waterside buildings are more pleasant in daylight, before the temperature drops. Stop for Sanhe rice dumplings, a local snack, while you explore. Check opening times locally, as some smaller businesses may close earlier in the quiet season.
