Best Time to Visit Wenzhou

Autumn is the sweet spot

October to December is when Wenzhou feels best. November rates Excellent. Days are mild, around 20°C, and the air finally loses that sticky weight. It still rains on about a dozen days in November, but it's usually light, so keep a small umbrella in your bag.

October is the driest of the warm months and still feels like late summer. It suits a trip to Yandang Mountain, the craggy national park northeast of the city. Its trails, cliffs and waterfalls are far more pleasant when you're not sweating through every staircase. In Wenzhou itself, walk the Jiangxin Island park in the Oujiang River and look for the two old pagodas.

Autumn also lines up with China's National Day holiday in the first week of October. Trains and scenic spots get busy then. If you hate crowds, aim for mid-October or November.

Winter and early spring: cool and grey

December and January are the driest months, with rain on 8 or 9 days. Highs sit around 13 to 14°C and nights get properly chilly, around 4 or 5°C. Wenzhou doesn't get snow, but damp cold feels sharper than the numbers suggest, and many buildings aren't well heated.

It's a good time for food. Try Wenzhou fish balls, glutinous rice cakes and the local rice noodles in a warm, steamy shop. Chinese New Year falls in January or February, and the city goes quiet as many people head to family homes. Some restaurants close for days. Travel is also hard in the weeks around it, since millions are on the move.

March and April warm up, but they're damp. Rain falls on about 15 or 16 days a month, and skies are often grey. Qingming, the tomb-sweeping holiday in early April, brings a short burst of domestic travel.

Summer: hot, wet and typhoon-prone

May to September is the hard stretch. June is the wettest month, with 282 mm over 21 days, during the plum rain season (meiyu, a long spell of steady rain). Humidity sits near 88%, and clothes never quite dry.

July and August are the hottest, both with highs of 31°C and warm nights of 25°C. They're also the sunniest, though still not dry. Wenzhou's coast sits in the path of typhoons, mostly from July to September, which can cancel trains, flights and ferries. Allow a spare day if you have a fixed connection.

Summer is school holiday time, so families fill Yandang and the coast. If you do come, keep your plans flexible and spend the hottest hours indoors.
