Best Time to Visit Rui'an

Autumn and early winter: the sweet spot

October to December is when Rui'an feels easiest. October still gets up to 25°C, but the sticky heat has gone and rain falls on only about nine days. November is our top-rated month. Afternoons are mild, around 20°C, and you can walk the old streets without a damp shirt.

Don't expect blue skies every day. Even now it's often grey and soft-lit, and humidity stays high. December is the driest month, with 55 mm, but evenings get chilly and houses here often have no central heating. Pack a proper jacket for the nights.

This is the best window for a city break. Wander the river lanes, eat local noodles and dumplings at small shops, and take a day trip to the coast near Wenzhou. If you hate crowds, you'll find these months calm.

Spring: green but soggy

March and April sit around 18°C to 22°C, which is pleasant on paper. But rain falls on 15 or 16 days a month, and the sun rarely breaks through. It's drizzle more than downpours. That's fine for tea-house afternoons and museums, less fun for countryside walks.

May is where things turn. It's warmer, wetter and stickier, and our data rates it Poor. Chinese holiday weeks, like the early May Labour Day break, can make trains and roads busier. Travelling by high-speed rail from Wenzhou helps you skip road jams.

Summer: hot, wet and typhoon-prone

June is the wettest month, with 282 mm on 21 days. That's the plum rain season, a long spell of heavy, humid weather across eastern China. July and August are hotter, with highs of 32°C and 31°C and lows of 25°C. Nights barely cool down. July is drier than its neighbours and sunnier, but it's still a Poor month.

Typhoon season runs from roughly July to September along this coast. Storms can cancel ferries and trains, so keep your plans loose. School holidays in July and August bring families to the beaches, so coastal spots get busier. If you must come in summer, stay near air conditioning and plan indoor afternoons.

Winter: cool and quiet

January and February are cool but not freezing, with highs of 13°C to 14°C and lows near 4°C. January is dry by local standards. February is greyer and wetter. Chinese New Year, which falls in late January or February, is the big event. Many shops and restaurants close for several days as people go home to family, so check opening times. It's a good moment to see local traditions, but a poor one for sightseeing.
