Best Time to Visit Taizhou

Autumn and early winter: the sweet spot

October to December is when Taizhou is easiest to enjoy. October still feels like a warm spring day, and it has the fewest rainy days of the year, just nine. November is our top-rated month. It's mild, with cool mornings and pleasant afternoons. December is drier still, but you'll want a jacket by evening.

This is the time for walking the old city wall at Linhai, which climbs along the hills above the Ling River. It's also good for day trips into the Tiantai mountains, where trails and temples are much less sticky than in summer. Seafood is the local draw. Try the crab and the fresh fish in the city's harbour restaurants.

Spring and the plum rains

February to April is cool, grey and damp. Rain falls on 13 to 15 days a month, and sun is scarce. It's fine for a city break with indoor stops, but it's not great for views. Hiking is possible if you don't mind wet steps and cloud.

By May the rain gets heavier. June is the wettest month, with 257 mm on 21 days. That's the meiyu, the "plum rain" season, when the sky stays low and everything feels damp. If you hate drizzle, skip it. If you like quiet temples and empty paths, it has its charms.

Summer: hot, wet and typhoon-prone

July and August are the hottest months, both with highs of 31°C and warm nights of 26°C. Humidity stays high, so afternoons feel heavy. August is wetter than July, with showers on 20 days. September is still warm, and it's also the tail end of typhoon season, when storms can come off the East China Sea. Check forecasts before heading to the coast or islands.

Travelling with kids? Summer school holidays bring domestic families to the coast and mountains, so beaches and scenic spots get busier. Prices and crowds ease off once school returns.

Crowds and holidays

Taizhou is not a big international tourist stop, so "high season" mostly means Chinese holidays. Expect more people around Chinese New Year, which usually falls in late January or February, and during the National Day break in early October. Many locals travel then, so trains and popular sights fill up. For the calmest good weather, aim for November, when you get mild days without the holiday rush.
