May feels warm, damp and often cloudy. Days reach 25°C, but humidity is high, and rain falls on 17 days. You may get a bright spell, but don't count on a full day of sunshine. June is hotter and wetter, while April is cooler and drier.

The mix of showers and sticky air can make long hikes feel tiring. Save Shenxianju's mountain paths for a clearer day, and keep Linhai's old streets or a museum as a rainy-day option. The coast is less appealing when skies stay grey.

Holidays and crowds

China's Labour Day holiday brings a rush of domestic visitors in early May. Popular sights and transport can feel busy, and hotel rates often rise around the break. Outside the holiday, crowds and prices are usually easier than during October to December, Taizhou's better-weather travel season.

Families travelling during the school break may find the holiday crowds tiring; aim for quieter weekdays after it ends.

May is also spring, not the main season for Taizhou's best-known Dragon Boat Festival celebrations, which fall later in the year. Don't assume you'll catch them during a May visit.

A useful local tip

At Linhai Ancient City, the Great Wall of Jiangnan runs above the old town. Rain can leave its stone steps slick, so check the sky before setting out and take your time on the climb. If showers roll in, duck into the lanes below for a slower visit.

For a damp afternoon, try Taizhou's seafood in a local restaurant rather than planning a long coastal outing. May's frequent rain and low sunshine can make beach time a gamble, but the city's old streets still work well between showers.
