May: warm and damp

May in Wenzhou feels mild to warm, but damp air and frequent rain can make the day feel sticky. Showers fall on many days, and cloud often softens the views. It's a better month for flexible city visits than for a full schedule of outdoor sightseeing.

You can explore Wuma Street's shops and snack stalls between showers, or visit Wenzhou Museum when the weather turns wet. The Nanxi River is lovely in spring, but rain can spoil a long riverside outing. Save exposed walks for a brighter spell, and don't count on a clear view from the hills.

Crowds and holidays

The May Day holiday brings a surge of domestic travellers to popular sights and transport routes. Wenzhou can feel busier then, and hotels and train tickets may cost more than in quieter weeks. Outside the holiday, May is usually less crowded than the popular October-to-December travel season.

If you hate crowds, visit Jiangxin Islet on a weekday outside the May Day break. The historic island in the Ou River is reached by ferry, so check the service locally if heavy rain affects your plans.

Make rain work for you

May is wetter than April, and June is wetter still, so there's no need to wait for summer for warmer weather. But with limited sunshine, a beach-focused trip or a long hike may feel like a gamble. Keep an indoor stop near your outdoor plans, and enjoy Wenzhou's food scene when showers set in.
