Cool, changeable days

December feels cool rather than bitterly cold in Taizhou. Afternoons reach 14°C, but mornings and evenings can dip to 5°C. Rain falls on around eight days, and cloudy skies are common, so the weather can turn damp while you're out.

It's a good month for Linhai's old town and the Jiangnan Great Wall, where cooler air makes walking easier than in summer. Rain can make the wall's stone steps slippery, though, so save the climb for a dry day. Beach time is less appealing now, and mountain trails around Tiantai can feel chilly and wet.

A quiet month

December has no major traditional public holiday in Taizhou. You may see Christmas displays in shopping centres, but it isn't a local festival season. New Year's Day is just after the month ends.

Visitor numbers are generally lower than during summer and China's October holiday, so Linhai's Ziyang Street feels calmer. Accommodation often costs less than in those busy periods, though exact rates vary. For a quieter city break, you'll find fewer tour groups at the old town sights.

Make room for a warm meal

For families, December's cooler walks can be easier than Taizhou's sticky summer sightseeing, but keep indoor stops in mind for rainy spells. The Taizhou Museum is a useful break from the weather and adds local history to a day in the city.

In Linhai, pause on Ziyang Street for wheat cakes, a local snack often filled with savoury ingredients. It's especially welcome after a damp walk along the wall. Check the steps before setting off; wet stone can be slick, even when the rain has stopped.
