Cixi Weather in December

December: cool and damp

December feels chilly rather than bitterly cold. Afternoons reach about 12°C, but mornings and evenings can drop to 3°C. Humidity is high, and rain falls on several days, so grey, damp spells are part of the visit. It's drier than November, though rain picks up again in January.

You can still walk around Minghe Ancient Town or visit the Cixi Yue Kiln Museum. At Hangzhou Bay National Wetland Park, winter is a good time to look for migratory birds, but wet paths and cloudy skies can make a long outdoor day less appealing. Save a full day of outdoor sightseeing for a dry forecast.

Quiet days and local holidays

December has no major fixed local festival in Cixi. Christmas isn't a public holiday in China, and December 25 is generally an ordinary day. New Year's Day comes just after the month, so don't expect December to feel like a big holiday season.

Compared with October, Cixi's best month overall, December is quieter. Hotels and attractions may cost less than during the autumn peak, though prices vary. Families who prefer quieter visits may find the slower pace easier, but children may enjoy indoor stops more than long, damp walks.

A useful wet-weather plan

Keep your visit flexible: pair a short walk at Minghe with a warm meal, then spend more time indoors if rain sets in. Ask for local Cixi-style rice cakes or a bowl of hot soup at a restaurant in town; they're a welcome break from the cold.

For the wetland park, check with staff about current path conditions before setting out. The park is spread out, and a rainy walk there can feel much longer than a visit to the compact old-town lanes. Don't count on December sunshine for scenic views across Hangzhou Bay.
