July: hot and humid

Cixi is sticky in July, with highs around 32°C and nights near 25°C. Humidity reaches 83%, and rain falls on 17 days, so afternoons can feel heavy and showers may interrupt plans. It's not a comfortable month for long walks in the open.

You can still visit Cixi's Minghe Ancient Town, but take breaks in its shaded lanes and tea houses. Save outdoor time for calmer parts of the day, and keep indoor stops in mind if rain sets in. The Hangzhou Bay National Wetland Park is best for a short visit, not a long exposed walk.

Summer plans and crowds

July has no major national public holiday in China. School summer vacation is underway, though, so family attractions can be busier than in quieter months. Cixi is generally more popular in summer than in autumn, and accommodation may cost more than in October, one of the best months to visit.

Families may enjoy the extra daylight, but the heat and frequent rain can make a full day out tiring. If you're sensitive to heat, July may not be your month.

A local tip

For a cooler break, visit the Cixi Museum during the hottest part of the day, then head to Minghe later. The museum gives you an indoor stop without leaving the city's local history behind.

Carry a small umbrella for sudden showers around the Hangzhou Bay area. July brings more rain than August, though June is wetter still, so don't count on every day being a washout. Check conditions before heading to the wetland park; muddy paths can make a long stroll less enjoyable.
