Heat and rain

July in Shaoxing feels hot, sticky and often cloudy. Afternoons reach 32°C, while humidity stays high. Rain falls on 16 days, though showers don't necessarily last all day. It's wetter than August, but June is rainier still.

The heat makes long walks through Lu Xun Native Place tiring, especially around midday. Save shaded lanes and indoor stops, such as the Lu Xun Memorial Hall, for the hottest part of the day. East Lake's boat rides are lovely when the weather is clear, but heavy rain can spoil the outing. Keep a flexible plan.

Summer crowds

July has no major nationwide Chinese holiday, but school summer break brings families to Shaoxing. Popular sights and transport can feel busier than in quieter months. Hotel prices may also be higher than during less popular travel periods.

If you hate crowds, visit Lu Xun Native Place on a weekday rather than joining the weekend rush. October is a more comfortable month overall, though the National Day holiday can be busy too.

Make the most of it

A short evening stroll around Shen Garden can be easier than a long daytime sightseeing route. For a local meal, try Shaoxing's yellow wine chicken, a dish cooked with the city's famous rice wine. July's warm, damp weather can make a rich meal feel heavy, so share it with other dishes.

Practical tip: if you're visiting East Lake, ask locally whether the boat route is running after heavy rain. The lake's cliffs and narrow waterways are best seen from the boat, but wet conditions can affect trips. Don't build your whole day around it.
