August: hot and sticky

Shaoxing is hot, humid and often rainy in August. Days reach 32°C, and nights stay warm at 25°C. Rain falls on many days, so sudden showers can interrupt a walk through the old town.

Choose indoor stops during the sticky afternoon, such as the Shaoxing Museum or the former residence of Lu Xun. Save a canal-side stroll in Cangqiao Straight Street for a cooler spell. The low comfort rating is worth taking seriously: long walks and exposed hikes can feel draining.

Summer holidays and crowds

August falls in China's summer school holidays, so family attractions and popular sights can feel busy. Prices are generally higher than in quieter months, especially compared with autumn, when Shaoxing's weather is more comfortable.

Qixi, China's traditional lovers' festival, sometimes falls in August, but its date changes each year. Don't count on a large local event during your visit. If you hate crowds, try the smaller lanes around Bazi Bridge instead of sticking to Lu Xun's former residence and the busiest canal streets.

Make room for a rainy day

Travelling with kids? Keep a flexible plan, since rain can make a full day outdoors tiring.

A useful local tip: take a covered boat ride through Shaoxing's canals if showers roll in. You'll still see the waterways without walking in the rain. For a meal, try Shaoxing drunken chicken, chicken marinated in local rice wine; it's a regional dish, not just a rainy-day snack. Check that the boat route you choose runs in wet weather, as services can change with conditions.
