February: cool and damp

February feels like a chilly, often cloudy winter month in Shaoxing. Days reach about 11°C, but nights can fall to 2°C. Rain comes on 12 days, and the air is humid, so a wet walk can feel colder than the numbers suggest.

It's still a good time for museums and slow city walks. Browse the Lu Xun Native Place, then duck into a teahouse around Cangqiao Straight Street when the drizzle sets in. The canal lanes are atmospheric in grey weather, but East Lake's open paths and boat rides are less appealing when it's cold and wet. Save long outdoor stops for a dry spell.

Spring Festival changes the pace

Chinese New Year sometimes falls in February, though its date shifts each year. If it does, Shaoxing may feel quieter as locals travel, while transport gets busy before and after the holiday. Some family-run shops and restaurants may close, so don't count on every lane being open.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling on the main holiday dates; the rest of February is usually a quieter, lower-season choice than October. Prices are generally less pressured than in peak autumn, but holiday travel can change that.

Make rainy days local

February is colder and wetter than January, and March is milder but wetter still. You'll get only a few hours of sunshine on an average day, so leave some room to swap plans.
