Warm days, damp spells

September feels like a move towards autumn, but Shaoxing can still be warm and sticky. The high is 28°C, with humidity at 83%, and rain falls on 13 days. Showers can interrupt a walk, though they don't usually rule out a whole day.

Compared with August, it's cooler and a little less wet. You'll find canal-side walks around Cangqiao Straight Street more pleasant than in summer, especially between showers. Save long outdoor visits for breaks in the rain, and don't count on dry weather for a full day exploring the old town.

September is a useful shoulder-season choice: the summer rush has eased, while October's cooler weather draws more visitors. You may find better value than during October's holiday week, but weekend crowds still gather around popular sights.

At the Lu Xun Native Place, take time to explore the lanes beyond the main memorial sites. They're a quieter way to see the neighbourhood, and you can pause at a nearby shop for stinky tofu, a local snack with a strong smell. Keep your plans flexible if rain sets in.
