July feels hot and damp

Jiaxing is hot, sticky and often cloudy in July. Afternoon highs reach 32°C, while nights stay warm. Rain falls on many days, and heavy showers can interrupt a walk around South Lake or the old lanes of Xitang. The air can feel close, even when the sun isn't out.

Choose indoor stops for the wettest part of the day, such as Jiaxing Museum, and save waterside walks for a break in the rain. Long sightseeing days can feel tiring in this heat. July is a poor month for anyone hoping for cool, dry weather.

Summer holidays bring visitors

China's summer school holiday usually falls in July and August, so family attractions and water towns can be busier than in quieter months. You may also find higher hotel prices than in low season. October is Jiaxing's best month overall, though holiday periods there can draw crowds too.

Families with school-age children may find July easier for time off, but should expect busy sights and sticky afternoons.

There isn't a major fixed Jiaxing festival to count on every July. Treat local event dates as variable rather than building your trip around one.

Make room for rain

Jiaxing is famous for zongzi, sticky rice parcels wrapped in leaves. Try one from the long-established Wufangzhai shop near the city centre; it's a handy stop when a shower rolls in.

At South Lake, check whether boat rides are running after heavy rain, then visit the Red Boat Memorial Ship on the island. That way, a wet spell doesn't leave you with only a damp lakeside walk. Xitang's covered corridors also offer some shelter, though the stone lanes can be slippery.
