December weather

December feels cool and often grey in Songjiang. Days reach about 11°C, while nights fall to 3°C. Rain is lighter than in November, but you can still get a damp day. There's around five hours of sunshine, so outdoor visits work best when skies are clear.

Guangfulin Cultural Relics Park is a good fit for a crisp afternoon, with its striking museum partly set below the water. You can also walk around Sheshan, but skip a long hill visit if it's wet or windy. Evenings suit a warm meal indoors more than lingering outside.

What's on

Christmas isn't a major public holiday in China, though you may spot decorations in shopping areas. Songjiang doesn't have a dependable large December festival to plan around. New Year's Eve brings a festive mood in some commercial spots, but January 1 is the public holiday.

If you hate crowds, December is usually calmer than October, Songjiang's best-known month for a visit. Winter is low season, so stays may cost less than during autumn's popular weeks. Crowds can still build at popular attractions on weekends and around New Year.

Make the most of it

Travelling with kids? Keep a flexible indoor option for colder, cloudy afternoons. Songjiang's museums and the covered parts of Guangfulin make handy alternatives to a long outdoor walk.

For a local meal, look for Songjiang four-gill perch, a fish closely linked with the district. Ask whether it's available before you settle on it. At Sheshan, the hill and basilica are exposed to the weather, so save that outing for a dry spell. The cooler air can make walking pleasant, but damp paths are less comfortable underfoot.
