May feels warm and damp, with afternoon highs around 26°C and nights near 16°C. Rain falls on many days, and cloudy skies are common, so outdoor plans can get interrupted. You'll still have long daylight for exploring, but expect sticky spells rather than reliably sunny beach weather.

It's a good month for Tianyi Pavilion, Ningbo's historic library and garden, or a meal around the Old Bund. Keep a flexible plan for rainy hours. Dongqian Lake is lovely for a walk when the skies clear, but persistent rain can make lakeside outings less appealing.

Holidays and crowds

China's Labour Day holiday falls in early May and brings a busy spell. Popular sights and transport can feel crowded, especially when local families are out. Outside the holiday, May is generally calmer than October, one of Ningbo's best months to visit, and prices are usually less pressured than during peak travel periods.

If you hate crowds, avoid the Labour Day rush and visit Tianyi Pavilion on a weekday. May also includes International Museum Day; Ningbo Museum is a good place to look for local exhibitions or activities around the occasion.

Make rainy days work

Rain can spoil a full day outdoors, so pair a visit to the Old Bund with time at Ningbo Museum, whose striking building was designed by Wang Shu. For a local food stop, try Ningbo tangyuan: soft rice balls often filled with black sesame.

Travelling with kids? Keep the museum as your backup when showers set in. May is wetter than April, though not as wet as June, so a changeable day is more likely than a washout. If you're heading to Dongqian Lake, check conditions locally before setting out; its open paths are less fun in steady rain.
