June is hot in Shangqiu, and that heat is the main reason it rates only fair. Afternoons can reach 34°C, and evenings stay warm around 21°C. Humidity is moderate, but cloud and rain can break up a day out. Showers fall on about nine days, so plan to explore the Ancient City's lanes and courtyard homes in the cooler morning hours.

The long daylight helps, but don't count on a clear sky all day. When the afternoon gets sticky, save the Shangqiu Museum or a slow lunch for the middle of the day, then head back outside once it cools. The 83 mm of rain is manageable compared with July's much wetter spell, though a sudden shower can still spoil an outdoor plan.

What's on

The Dragon Boat Festival sometimes falls in June, but its date follows the lunar calendar, so it moves each year. If it lands on your trip, you may see zongzi, sticky rice parcels wrapped in leaves, sold around town. It's a good chance to try a local festival food, but don't expect a major public celebration in Shangqiu.

If you're travelling with kids, the Ancient City's broad streets are easier to enjoy before the afternoon heat sets in.

June is summer, but it's usually calmer than July and August, when school holidays bring more domestic visitors. Prices may be gentler than in peak summer, though they vary by date and hotel. If you can pick your dates, though, April and October are the better choice, since they're Shangqiu's best months overall.

At Shangqiu Ancient City, ask your taxi driver to drop you at the South Gate. It gives you a clear starting point for walking the old streets. Keep your plans flexible around showers, and save indoor stops for the hottest hours.
