May feels warm and often sunny, with afternoons reaching 30°C and cooler evenings near 15°C. It's a good month for walking Shangqiu Ancient City and exploring its old streets, especially when you can pause in the shade. Rain falls on about six days, so a shower may interrupt an outdoor visit.

The heat builds as the month goes on, so long walks across open areas can feel tiring in the afternoon. Save the most exposed parts of the Ancient City for a cooler time of day, and use a rainy spell to visit a museum instead.

May Day crowds

China's May Day holiday brings a rush of domestic visitors. Shangqiu Ancient City and the area around its moat can feel much busier then, and rooms or train seats may cost more than on ordinary May dates. The rest of the month is usually a calmer choice than the holiday period.

If you hate crowds, visit after the May Day rush; you'll have more room to wander the old streets.

Compared with April, May is warmer and wetter. It's also not one of Shangqiu's best-value quiet months: October is another popular time to visit, while holiday demand can push May prices up.

Make time for the old city

Give yourself time to walk the historic streets inside Shangqiu Ancient City, rather than seeing only the main gate. The city's layout and moat make a pleasant outing, but warm afternoons are less comfortable for lingering outdoors. A cloudy spell can be a welcome break from the sun.

For a practical local stop, look for food around the Ancient City after your walk. It's easier to take a shaded break nearby than to cross town in the afternoon heat. May's longer daylight also leaves room for a relaxed evening stroll by the moat.
