May weather in Suzhou

May feels warm, with mild evenings and a fair chance of rain. You'll get more daylight than in April, so there's time for a relaxed city stroll and an outing to Huangzangyu National Forest Park, in nearby Xiao County. The hills are a better fit for walking than a sticky afternoon in June, when rain increases.

Rain falls on several days, so don't count on every outing staying dry. Keep indoor stops in Suzhou city for a wet spell, and avoid making a long countryside trip the only plan for your day.

May Day crowds

China's Labour Day holiday falls at the start of May. Popular transport routes and attractions can get busy then, as many people travel around the country. Outside the holiday, May is generally a calmer choice than the summer break or October's National Day holiday.

If you hate crowds, travel later in the month, after the holiday rush. Rooms and train seats can be harder to find, and may cost more, during the holiday than on ordinary May weekdays.

What to do

May is spring, and the comfortable weather suits sightseeing and outdoor walks. You can explore Suzhou's local streets or spend a day among the wooded paths at Huangzangyu. The warmer afternoons can still feel tiring, so keep strenuous walks for cooler parts of the day.

Travelling with kids? Choose a shorter Huangzangyu walk, then head back to town if rain sets in. For a practical local tip, check your route carefully: Huangzangyu is in Xiao County, not central Suzhou, so allow time for the trip instead of treating it as a quick city-side stop.
