October: mild autumn days

October is one of Suzhou's best months for getting out and about. Days feel mild, while evenings are cooler, and rain is usually brief rather than a constant washout. You'll have comfortable conditions for exploring Suzhou Museum or taking a day trip to Huangzangyu National Forest Park. The park's wooded paths are a better bet than a long outing during September's wetter weather.

The air can still feel humid, and cloudy spells are common. Skip plans that depend on a full day of bright sunshine, and keep indoor sights in mind if rain rolls through. Evenings cool down, so outdoor stops may feel less appealing after dark.

National Day crowds

China's National Day holiday begins in October and brings a big wave of domestic travellers. Suzhou's sights and transport can feel much busier during the holiday, and fares or hotel prices may rise. Outside that peak, October is generally calmer than the holiday period and a good alternative to the warmer, rainier September.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling during the National Day break and visit Huangzangyu on a weekday instead.

A good time to explore

October's pleasant weather makes it a strong month for a city break, especially if you want to mix Suzhou Museum with time outdoors. It's also drier than September, though not by much compared with November. You'll still want a flexible plan for passing showers.

For a practical local tip, check the route to Huangzangyu before setting out from Suzhou city. It's in Xiaoxian County, so it's a separate day trip, not a quick walk from the centre. Head there on a clear day to make the most of its forest trails.
