March: cool spring days

March feels like a changeable start to spring in Suzhou, Anhui. Days can reach 17°C, but mornings and evenings may dip to 3°C, so the day can feel very different from the evening. Rain falls on about five days, and cloud often softens the light.

It's a good month for walking around town or taking a day trip to Huangzangyu National Forest Park in Xiaoxian County. Cooler conditions suit the park's forest paths better than sticky summer heat. Rain can make trails muddy, though, so skip a long walk after a wet spell. The weather is less settled than April's, but March gets more sun than its cloud cover might suggest.

What's on in March?

There isn't a major fixed festival in Suzhou, Anhui, that draws visitors every March. The Lantern Festival follows the lunar calendar, so it can fall in February or March; check the date if you're hoping to see celebrations. Qingming, a major spring holiday for visiting family graves, usually falls in early April rather than March.

If you hate crowds, March is a calmer choice than the main spring travel period. It comes before April, one of Suzhou's best months overall, and doesn't bring the same holiday rush. Prices may be easier than in busier travel periods, though local rates can vary.

A handy local tip

Travelling with kids? Keep Huangzangyu as a flexible day trip, not a must-do on a rainy day. The scenic area is outside the city, in Xiaoxian County, so wet trails can make the outing less fun. Save it for a brighter day and enjoy a shorter stroll around Suzhou instead.

March is also cooler and drier than April, while February is colder. That makes it a useful middle ground if you want spring scenery without the warmer, wetter feel of the following month. Check local notices for park access before setting out.
