Shangqiu Weather in April

April feels mild

April is one of the two best months to visit Shangqiu, with October the other. Afternoons reach about 24°C, while mornings and evenings stay cool at around 9°C. March is cooler, and May turns much hotter and wetter, so April sits in a comfortable middle.

Rain tends to come in short bursts, with about five wet days across the month. You'll get plenty of sunny spells, though cloud is common, so pack a light layer. The weather suits walks around Shangqiu Ancient City and its old streets. It's also a good time for a day trip to the nearby Mangdangshan Han Tombs, as long as you keep an eye on the sky.

Qingming and local days

Qingming Festival falls in early April, though its date changes each year. Families visit ancestors' graves, and some people travel to their hometowns. You may notice more domestic visitors and busier transport around the holiday.

If you hate crowds, avoid arriving on the Qingming holiday itself. Outside that brief peak, April is generally calmer than summer's school-holiday period. Prices are harder to predict, and demand can rise around the holiday, so the rest of the month is a better bet for a quieter stay.

Local tips for Shangqiu

Travelling with kids? The milder afternoons make exploring the Ancient City easier. Leave room for a slow walk along its moat, then duck into a local noodle shop if the weather turns.

Use the South Gate of Shangqiu Ancient City as your meeting point. The old streets can be confusing, and the gate gives you a clear landmark when you're finding your way back.
