Visiting Sendai in July
July: warm and damp
Sendai feels warm, sticky and often cloudy in July. The high is 28°C, but humidity sits at 85%, and rain falls on 18 days. Expect showers to interrupt walks, not necessarily wash out the whole day. The weather is less comfortable than May, Sendai's best month overall.
Try covered sights such as Sendai City Museum or the shops around Sendai Station when rain sets in. Aogisawa Gorge and long walks through the city can feel muggy, so keep outdoor plans flexible. The coast is an option, but cloudy skies and frequent rain can make it less of a beach day.
Festivals and summer crowds
Sendai's famous Tanabata Festival is in August, not July. Its colourful streamers fill the city centre then, with the busiest crowds around the main festival days. July brings Japan's Marine Day holiday and, later in the month, the start of school summer holidays. That can mean more visitors and rising prices than in quieter spring months, though July is generally less busy than Tanabata week.
If you hate crowds, visit Sendai before the school holidays begin and save the festival crowds for another trip.
Make room for rainy days
Plan a flexible day around Sendai Station: you can browse its shops and find local gyutan, or grilled beef tongue, without crossing the city in a downpour. For a clearer spell, take the Loople Sendai bus to major sights such as Zuihoden, the ornate mausoleum of Date Masamune.
The long daylight helps you fit in sightseeing, but sunshine is limited and cloud cover is common. Don't count on a full day outdoors. A warm, wet afternoon is better suited to a museum stop and a relaxed meal than a packed walking itinerary.
