Visiting Sendai in February
February: cold, damp days
Sendai's winter feels raw rather than snowy in the city. Days reach about 1°C, nights fall to -5°C, and rain comes on 19 days. High humidity, heavy cloud and little sunshine can make streets feel chilly even when you're sightseeing.
The weather works for indoor stops such as the Sendai City Museum or the covered shops along Ichibancho. You can still visit Osaki Hachimangu Shrine, but wet paths and cold waits make long outdoor visits less appealing. Save a day trip to the coast for a clearer forecast.
Setsubun and winter quiet
February brings Setsubun, a traditional event when people throw beans to drive away bad luck. You may find ceremonies at Sendai's shrines, including Osaki Hachimangu. It isn't a national public holiday, so the city doesn't shut down around it.
If you hate crowds, February is a good time to see Sendai's main sights at a calmer pace. It's winter low season, so visitor numbers and hotel prices are generally lower than during spring and summer peaks. You won't get the festive crowds of the August Tanabata festival, but you may also find fewer seasonal events.
Make the most of a wet day
Travelling with kids? A rainy afternoon is easier to manage in the covered arcades around Ichibancho than on exposed streets. They're handy for browsing shops and stopping for gyutan, Sendai's grilled beef tongue specialty.
For Osaki Hachimangu, take the local bus rather than making the whole trip on foot in cold rain. The shrine's stone approach can be slippery when wet. February is wetter than January, though March is still rainy, so don't count on a sunny stretch for outdoor plans.
