Sendai Weather in May

May feels mild

May is one of Sendai's easiest months for getting around. Days feel mild, while evenings can turn cool, so you may want a warmer layer after dinner. Rain falls on about 12 days, and cloudy spells are common. You can still enjoy walks through Aoba-dori and the grounds around Sendai Castle, but keep indoor stops in mind for rainy afternoons.

The green season suits a stroll through the city's parks or a day trip to Matsushima Bay. Wet paths can make longer walks less pleasant, so save exposed trails for clearer days. May is spring, not summer: the air can feel damp, but it's usually comfortable for sightseeing.

Festivals and holiday crowds

The Sendai Aoba Festival takes place in May, with the Suzume Odori, a lively sparrow dance, and parades along the city streets. Golden Week, Japan's major holiday period in late April and early May, also brings a surge of domestic visitors. Popular sights and trains can feel busy then.

If you hate crowds, visit after Golden Week. May is a popular month overall, so central hotels and transport can cost more than in quieter winter months. Outside the holiday rush, the city is generally calmer, though the festival draws its own crowds.

Make the most of the city
