Sendai Weather in December

Cold, damp days

December feels cold and often gloomy in Sendai. Daytime highs reach 4°C, while nights can drop to -2°C. Rain falls on 24 days, and the short days leave little daylight for long outings. The damp chill can make wandering outside feel tiring, so keep your plans flexible.

Sendai's covered shopping arcades, including Clis Road, are useful on wet afternoons. You can also visit Sendai Castle ruins for the views when skies are clear, but muddy paths and poor visibility can spoil the trip. If you hate crowds, December is a calmer time for city sightseeing than the busy spring season.

Lights and year-end

The Sendai Pageant of Starlight brings illuminated trees to Jozenji-dori in December. It's a lovely evening walk, though the popular stretch gets busy during the display. Warm up afterward with gyutan, Sendai's grilled beef tongue, at a nearby restaurant.

December is generally a quieter travel month than spring or summer, so accommodation can be easier to find and may cost less than during peak periods. The light display is an exception: expect more visitors around Jozenji-dori. Near the end of the month, some shops and restaurants close or change hours for Japan's New Year holidays.

Make the most of it

Travelling with kids? Keep outdoor plans short, then duck into the covered arcades or a museum when the weather turns dreary. For the Pageant of Starlight, use Kotodai-Koen subway station; it's close to Jozenji-dori and saves you a chilly walk from Sendai Station.

A stop at Sendai Morning Market near the station works well on a rainy day, too. You can browse local seafood and produce under cover, then find lunch nearby. Check opening hours before visiting around New Year, when smaller businesses may take a break.
