Yokohama Weather in December

Cool, clear days

December feels like proper winter in Yokohama. Days reach about 11°C, but evenings can drop to 1°C, so the waterfront gets chilly once the sun goes down. Rain is less common than in November, leaving plenty of dry spells for walking around.

You can spend mild afternoons exploring Sankeien Garden, the historic houses around Yamate, or the shops and cafés in Motomachi. The shorter daylight means you'll have less time for long outdoor plans. Save indoor stops, like the Cup Noodles Museum, for late afternoon. If you're hoping to swim or lounge on the beach, this isn't the month; choose a harbour walk instead.

Lights and year-end

Yokohama's seasonal illuminations make Minato Mirai and the waterfront around the Red Brick Warehouse especially appealing after dark. The Red Brick Warehouse often hosts a Christmas market, with food stalls and decorations. It draws crowds, particularly on weekends, so visit on a weekday if you want more room to browse.

If you hate crowds, avoid the busiest waterfront spots on weekend evenings. December is generally calmer than November's popular autumn-leaf season, but Christmas events bring their own busy patches. New Year is a different story: many shops and attractions close or change hours around the holiday, and travel can get busy.

Getting around Yokohama in December

Compared with peak blossom season, December can be easier on both crowds and accommodation prices, though rates may rise around Christmas and New Year. Check opening hours before heading to a specific museum or restaurant during the year-end break.

Travelling with kids? The Cup Noodles Museum pairs well with a short Minato Mirai walk before dusk. For an easy evening, take the Minato Mirai Line to Bashamichi and walk to the Red Brick Warehouse; the waterfront can feel much colder than the sheltered streets inland. A warm bowl of Yokohama-style ramen is a welcome finish.
