December: cool and subdued

Nagoya feels properly wintry in December. Afternoons reach about 11°C, while mornings and evenings can fall to 3°C. It's cooler than November, and the shorter days leave less time for outdoor plans. Rain falls on around 11 days, so a grey, damp spell is possible.

Nagoya Castle and Atsuta Jingu still make good outings, but you may prefer shorter visits outside. For a rainy afternoon, head to the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology or browse the covered Osu Shopping Arcade. Long walks in exposed parks can feel chilly, especially after sunset.

Christmas lights and year-end

Sakae's Nagoya Christmas Market brings seasonal stalls and decorations to Hisaya Odori Park. It's a pleasant stop after shopping, though the outdoor setting can feel cold on a wet evening. The city also sees year-end and New Year activity around Atsuta Jingu, a major shrine where people gather for hatsumode, their first shrine visit of the year.

If you hate crowds, visit Atsuta Jingu before the New Year rush rather than around New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. December is generally calmer than November, one of Nagoya's best months, and prices are often gentler than during autumn's peak. The holiday period can still bring more visitors and higher room rates.

Make rainy hours easy

Travelling with kids? The SCMAGLEV and Railway Park in Kinjo-futo is a good indoor choice, with real trains to explore. Getting there takes a train ride on the Aonami Line from Nagoya Station, so it works best as a dedicated outing.

For a simpler wet-weather plan, use Sakae's underground Central Park passages to move between the subway, shops and Oasis 21 with less time in the rain. Then step outside for the market or TV Tower when the weather clears. December suits city sights and museums better than long, open-air days.
