Nara Weather in December

December: crisp days, cold evenings

December feels properly wintry in Nara. Days reach about 10°C, but nights can drop to 2°C, so the cold is more noticeable once you leave the temples. Rain comes on some days, though November is wetter. With limited daylight, keep outdoor wandering to the brighter hours.

You can still enjoy Nara Park, the deer, and the great Buddha inside Tōdai-ji. The indoor sights are a welcome pause from the cold. Save longer walks around Mount Wakakusa for a dry day, and don't count on lingering outdoors after dusk. Families with young children may find temple visits easier than a long, chilly park wander.

Festivals and year-end traditions

Kasuga Wakamiya On-Matsuri runs in December, with its main procession on December 17. It's a traditional festival with performers in historic costume, so it offers a different feel from Nara's quieter temple visits. Check the local schedule before you go, as the procession and related events can affect movement around central Nara.

At the end of the month, temples and shrines prepare for the New Year. The atmosphere grows more local and practical than celebratory, and some businesses may adjust their hours around the holiday period.

Quieter than November

November is Nara's best month overall and brings autumn colour, so December is generally less busy. You'll often find the park and temple approaches calmer, with less pressure on rooms than during peak foliage or cherry blossom periods. It's a useful choice if you'd rather take your time than visit in mild, popular weather.

For a Nara-specific tip, walk from Kintetsu Nara Station toward Tōdai-ji through Nara Park, then warm up inside the Great Buddha Hall. The deer are still around, but cold weather can make a short outdoor stop feel much longer.
